Public Announcement on R.A. 9003: The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act



Dear Community Members,

We wish to bring your attention to Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.” This law underscores the importance of responsible waste management to protect our environment and promote sustainable living.


Source Reduction:
Encourages minimizing waste at the source through conscious consumption and reduction of unnecessary packaging.


Segregation at Source:
Mandates the segregation of waste into categories like biodegradable, non-biodegradable, recyclable, and special waste at the point of origin.


Establishment of Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs):
Calls for the establishment of MRFs in every barangay or locality to facilitate the recovery, recycling, and composting of waste materials.


Prohibition on Open Dumping and Burning:
Strictly prohibits open dumping and burning of solid waste, safeguarding our air and land from harmful pollutants.


Creation of Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB):
Establishes SWMBs in local government units to oversee and implement effective solid waste management programs.


Waste Management Education:
Promotes awareness and education on waste reduction, segregation, and recycling to instill responsible waste management practices in our community.



Penalties for Violations:
Imposes penalties on individuals, businesses, and local government units for non-compliance with the provisions of R.A. 9003.
As responsible members of our community, it is our collective duty to uphold and implement the principles of R.A. 9003. Let us work together to reduce, reuse, and recycle, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for ourselves and future generations.
